Vincitore del 1° premio al Cleveland International Piano Competition e dell’American Prize, e premiato ai concorsi Van Cliburn, Honens, Dublino, Sendai, Geza Anda e Valencia, Roberto Plano si è esibito in sale quali Lincoln Center, Salle Cortot, Wigmore Hall e Herkulessaal, con importanti direttori quali, tra gli altri, Sir Neville Marriner, James Conlon e Pinchas Zuckerman.
Attivo anche nella musica da camera, ha collaborato con i quartetti Takacs, Cremona, Jupiter, St. Petersburg, Fine Arts String Quartets e artisti tra i quali Domenico Nordio e Enrico Bronzi. Ha registrato per diverse etichette tra cui Decca e Brilliant ed è apparso più volte sulla copertina di Amadeus.
Descritto come il “Pavarotti del pianoforte” per il suo lirismo, il New York Times ha scritto: Questo pianista italiano ha dimostrato una maturità artistica che va oltre la sua età. C’era una meravigliosa chiarezza e controllo delle voci interiori nelle sue esecuzioni. Ha studiato al Conservatorio Verdi di Milano, alla Lake Como Academy e all’École Cortot di Parigi, dove ha conseguito il Diplôme Supérieur de Concertiste.
Diventato il primo italiano ad essere nominato titolare di una Cattedra di Pianoforte alla Boston University nel 2016, nel 2018 è stato nominato Professore Associato di Pianoforte presso l’Indiana University. Dal 2024 è Capo Dipartimento e Professore di Pianoforte presso il Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana e International Visiting Professor presso il Royal Northern College of Music di Manchester. Viene spesso invitato in giurie di concorsi internazionali quali Van Cliburn, Seoul e Honens.

An avid chamber musician, he has played with the Takacs, Cremona, Jupiter, St. Petersburg and Fine Arts String Quartets, and with Domenico Nordio and Enrico Bronzi, among others. He has recorded for several labels including Decca and Brilliant. In Italy, he has appeared multiple times on the cover of the music magazine Amadeus.
Described as the “Pavarotti of the Piano” for his lyricism, the New York Times wrote: This Italian pianist showed artistic maturity beyond his years. There was a wonderful clarity and control of inner voices in his performances. After joining in 2016 the Faculty of Boston University, in 2018 he has been appointed as Associate Professor of Piano at Indiana University. One of the most sought-after teachers in the world, since 2024 he is Head of School of Keyboard studied and Professor of Piano at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana and International Visiting Professor of Piano at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
